The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) presented a well-received hazardous materials training seminar last week, increasing its service delivery to the port community and the wider business sector.

The successful virtual session was facilitated and certified by the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) and staged over the course of two days, which began on February 22. It saw 35 participants, representing several companies across various industries throughout the Caribbean, receiving comprehensive information on hazardous materials regulations; identifying hazardous materials; preparing for and responding to hazardous situations; hazard communication; and occupational health and safety.

The intensive seminar was led by Wycliffe Frater, a senior lecturer at the CMU, and supplemented by a presentation and discourse on practical application by Dean Williams, manager of health, safety, and the environment at Kingston Wharves Limited.

The hazardous materials course is the first in the association’s series of monthly workshops – to benefit professionals within the industry and the general public – to be held this year.

The SAJ will next host a training session on basic Microsoft Excel in late March. Interested participants are asked to contact the SAJ at pallen@jamports.com for details.
