CSA, WiMAC sign MOU to promote maritime cooperation and development

The Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Women in Maritime Association, Caribbean (WiMAC) during its 52nd Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on November 2.

The two organisations signed the two-year agreement to foster public and private cooperation within the regional maritime industry and further the industry’s growth through mutually supportive and sector-enhancing initiatives.

The agreement was signed at the conference following a panel discussion on the mentorship of women in maritime, which explored how support and equal opportunities can be provided in an industry where they are under-represented.

Under the MOU, the CSA and WiMAC committed to jointly undertake initiatives which advocate for positive change on issues affecting women and the industry; contribute research and development on maritime issues and gender equality; network, support and mentor women in the sector; support training and advocacy; and promote the sector as a viable option for all, among others.

The partnership will focus on issues of interest to both organisations and may include activities to address port development dialogue and maritime port-related workshops, which may be part of a larger forum such as the CSA’s biannual conferences.

Additionally, the entities will each support activities of the other, where requested and appropriate, through marketing, support with planning and logistics and other related matters. Support on individual projects may also be provided as required and could include access to research data and publications, feedback on project directions, and dissemination of projects output.

Signatories to the vital agreement were CSA President Marc Sampson and WiMAC President Tamara Lowe, with the CSA’s General Manager, Milaika Capella Ras, acting as witness.

The CSA has over 100 members who collaborate to enable exchanges, agreements and transactions that result in employment, revenue generation, and the advancement of the maritime industry.

WiMAC is a body of female professionals established to enhance the development and participation of women in the maritime sector and contribute to the growth of the industry within the region. It is supported by the International Maritime Organization within its ongoing Women in Maritime programme.
