THE SHIPPING Association of Jamaica (SAJ) staged a successful three-day workshop on the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code which concluded on Thursday, July 6.

The workshop was facilitated and certified by the Caribbean Maritime University and explored the integral international guidelines which govern the safe movement of hazardous materials throughout the maritime industry. The oversubscribed course saw participants from a dozen companies across six countries instructed on how to enhance their understanding and implementation of these vital safety standards within the regional and global shipping community.

The SAJ’s IMDG Code workshop brought together representatives from shipping companies, freight forwarders, port authorities, and other industry professionals. The workshop aimed to disseminate knowledge about the IMDG Code, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of its requirements and implications.

It featured collaborative sessions which included topics on the classification of dangerous goods, packaging and labelling requirements, stowage and segregation rules, emergency response procedures, and documentation guidelines. The participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and gain insights into the proper handling and transportation of hazardous materials.

The workshop incorporated real-life scenarios which enabled participants to apply their knowledge of the IMDG Code and make informed decisions. This practical approach allowed them to foster critical-thinking skills and problem-solving abilities when it comes to managing dangerous goods in shipping operations.

The SAJ’s workshop also provided participants with important updates on regulatory changes related to the IMDG Code, to ensure compliance with the most recent standards and best practices. This allowed them to address concerns or queries related to regulatory matters and develop a collaborative approach towards maritime safety.

The training served to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills that contribute to improved safety measures, safeguard workers, and protect the maritime environment.

Compliance with the IMDG Code is integral to minimise risks and prevent accidents, making workshops like the one organised by the SAJ invaluable for stakeholders in the shipping industry.

The course was the latest offering by the SAJ in support of its commitment to ensure the highest standards of maritime safety in Jamaica’s shipping industry. Other workshops staged this year include customer service excellence and the Data Protection Act.
