The Caribbean Maritime University will be the honouree at the American Caribbean Maritime Foundation’s Anchor Awards next month.

The Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) will be the honouree of the Anchor Awards ceremony by the American Caribbean Maritime Foundation (ACMF) on Thursday, November 2, at the Lauderdale Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The Anchor Awards is being held under the theme ‘Talent in Your Backyard’ and will recognise the maritime institution, which has been a beneficiary of its scholarship programme since inception.

President of Tropical Shipping Tim Martim will be the gala chair, while the Republic of Guyana’s First Lady Arya Ali is the committee chair.

The awards and scholarship function will bring together top executives from the shipping and logistics industry under the direction of the foundation’s president, Dr Geneieve Brown Metzger, former Jamaica counsel general to New York.

The ACMF partners with four academic institutions to offer scholarships to students who want to pursue careers within the industry. The institutions are the CMU, the University of Trinidad and Tobago, the LJM Maritime Academy in The Bahamas, and MatPal Marine Institute in Guyana.

So far, the foundation has awarded approximately 100 scholarships and grants to students from across the Caribbean Community and has funded equipment, facilities, and infrastructure, including classrooms.

Previous Anchor Award honourees include the late Harriat Maragh, president of Lannaman and Morris Shipping Limited (2021); David Harding, MBE, past president of the Caribbean Shipping Association (2019); and Michael Bayley, president and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean International (2018).

The American Caribbean Maritime Foundation is a United States-based non-profit organisation whose mission is to alleviate poverty and transform lives in the Caribbean through maritime education and community development.
