SAJ spreads Christmas joy to elderly in Greenwich Farm
The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) continued its long-standing tradition of spreading holiday cheer to the elderly in Greenwich Farm with its annual treat last Wednesday, December 12.
The event, held at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, saw members of the SAJ team deliver care packages with essential items to 50 senior citizens in the community.
The atmosphere at the church was warm and joyful as SAJ staff exchanged greetings, sang holiday carols, and took a moment to express their appreciation for the seniors. The distribution was led by SAJ President Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester and included team members Jean Hinds-Bell, Dionne Mason-Gordon, Marsha Raffington-Christian and Toni-Ann Williams.
Robertson-Sylvester, who offered heartfelt remarks to the community, acknowledged that many in the community are facing challenges, and that it was important for the SAJ to take the time to celebrate and spread joy where possible. She noted that since the early 1990s, the company has played a significant role in the Greenwich Farm community, where it also supports the Marcus Garvey Basic School – including offering salary assistance and a feeding programme – and operates a twice-monthly clinic, which was under way during the treat, free of charge for its elderly residents.
The president also extended her gratitude to the clinic’s physician, Dr Zavion Edwards, whose efforts she lauded for its positive impact on the most vulnerable. Noting the importance of the SAJ’s ongoing health initiative, Robertson-Sylvester said the association will continue to support the clinic and its patients as best as possible.
The SAJ’s community ongoing charitable efforts are an integral part of its mission to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people in the surrounding areas and encourage community engagement throughout the year.
