Partying for a cause

The annual bird shooting season is more than just an opportunity for Jamaican men (and some women) and their children to go to the bush and bond. For some, it's also a chance to give back to the communities surrounding their hunting grounds. Many children get back-to-school supplies, pocket money and much needed equipment for their schools. Farmers receive tools, and even a few teachers' salaries have been paid in the past.

So, to help in the process, last Saturday night the members of Driftwood Sporting Club took over the Medusa club in Liguanea for one of two annual fund-raising parties. It was also the perfect excuse to celebrate the teams that had successfully made it to the quarter-finals of the World Cup football in Brazil. Club members swapped camouflage gears for football jerseys and performed host duties from the gate to working the crowd. The liquor flowed, great food was enjoyed and the music kept dancers on their feet.

CHARITY ACTIVITIES

According to club president, Nari Williams-Singh, Driftwood Sporting Club hosts both parties each year to raise funds for its charity activities. "While we respond to the various needs as they are presented to us, our primary benefactor is the Dunkley's Basic School in Newell, St Elizabeth," Williams-Singh told The Gleaner.

He added that the parties are successful because of the support of the many friends of the club and the faithful sponsors who recognise the work that they do.
