WESTERN BUREAU:

Scores of Montegonians flocked to tranquil and picturesque Bellefield Great House and Gardens in St James last Saturday for the fourth staging of the Fashion, Music and Tea event.

On what was a nice and sunny afternoon, it was perfect for the outdoor event. With a gigantic guango tree providing a natural canopy, the venue was relaxing and atmosphere pleasant. This made it ideal afternoon getaway from the heat and hustle and bustle of the big city below - a 10-minute drive away.

An annual fund-raiser, the event is staged by the St James Parish Church, included a full buffet with a plethora of culinary delights including cakes and other pastries, chicken kebabs, sandwiches, fish cutlets, among

others, with Rainforest Seafood offering a live station with pasta and shrimp and other seafood. Jamaican Teas, title sponsor of the event, also provided a seemingly unlimited supply of their wide range of teas and chocolate.

"I am very pleased. This is the fourth year we are doing the tea, and it actually started as an idea for something very different as a fundraiser, because the normal tea parties are sometimes very much the same and we wanted to do something very different," Event Coordinator Lisa Watt told Today.

She explained the event started at Seawind Club.

"We did that for two years and we outgrew that location, and this is our second staging at Bellefield. I look around and I see new faces each year, so that is a good sign," she added.

Guests were kept entertained by Boyus, balancer extraordinaire, Akeino, the contortionist, and Kingston-based Reggae quintet, Natty Baldheads, a fashion show by Whitter-Village-based Elegance Boutique, and the effervescent and witty Weston Haughton, who, again, served as emcee for the event.

"Most of the acts we use are acts that entertain visitors to the island, but our local audiences never see them, so I think it's nice when three or 400 persons can sit and see a local act that normally they would never get a chance to. We try to change the entertainment every year. I think it's nice when they come and they see a new act," Watt explained.

"We are looking how far back the lawn goes because we know each year we seem to be adding more and more. We are in the process of rebuilding our church hall and this will go a far way in helping us with the work the church has to do."
