Go Red for Women a matter of heart

Well, matters of the heart were at the forefront of the minds of those in attendance at the Go Red for Women High Tea put on by the Heart Foundation of Jamaica.

The Pavilion of the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel was transformed into a lavish red and white venue. Women and men came dressed like lords and ladies in the seductive colour, for a worthy cause.

The coordinators aptly chose the theme because studies show women are more at risk to suffer from heart disease. This was something that executive director of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica Deborah Chen wants to change. "This is a fundraiser to help with our screening exams, but we also want to raise awareness. Women are busy taking care of everyone else except ourselves," she noted.

Host Blossom O'Meally Nelson kept the event flowing effortlessly with good humour.

When it was time for this year's Go Red for Women ambassador Cindy Breakspeare to speak, last year's ambassador Thalia Lyn gave a speedy introduction. Breakspeare, still the elegant beauty she was in 1976, was equally as charismatic. She charmed the room while underlining the concern of heart disease in women.

To top off the exquisite event, Gem Myers not only entertained, but enchanted the crowd with her soothing voice. She was given a standing ovation after performing And I am Telling You, from the movie Dreamgirls, giving Jennifer Hudson's rendition a run for its money.

Following that, there were auctions, prizes, fine wine, and food for all to enjoy.
