Respecting the memory of Aretha
Dr Christopher Daley's acrylic-on-canvas, black-and-white painting capturing the soul of the late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was the highlight of the 'Blue Beat Ultra Lounge/Sarah's Children tribute last Friday night in Montego Bay.
A karaoke-style tribute used to raise funds for abused children and the elderly, the event was supported by an intimate group of music lovers who belted classics such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Respect, Say a Little Prayer for You, and Freeway of Love.
The vibe in the ultra fabulous lounge, which remains one of the best places on the Hip Strip, Gloucester Avenue, was complemented by the gynaecologist-at-day, artist-by-night's creation, which Ahhh Ras Natango's Tamika Williams said allowed her to sense the strength and presence of the Queen of Soul.
"I could feel the presence of her ancestors, which she obviously had surrounding her every step of her journey. Christopher, through his work, paid tribute to the icon, and her songs Natural Woman and Respect were skilfully captured in the painting."
Williams added that anyone who appreciates art and Aretha's music and owns the piece will be contributing to Sarah's Children, and the turnover on the investment is well worth it.
