STETHS, Glenmuir on verge of semis

DaCosta Cup champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) rode their luck to a combative 2-0 victory over St James High on their home ground at Santa Cruz in their quarter-final match of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME football competition yesterday.

Now they need just one point to seal a place in the final four.

They will get that opportunity next week against Petersfield High, who slammed Cedric Titus 9-1 at Frome Sports Complex to match the champions on six points heading into the deciding fixture.

STETHS were made to wait until the 67th minute to take the lead. Shawn Genus netted to complete the industry of Chris-Andrew Dixon, who swivelled and turned the defenders inside out before releasing the ball inside the area for Genus to score.

Donjay Smith then netted his 17th goal of the season when he scored directly from a corner in the 78th minute to double the hosts? advantage and from then it was STETHS all the way, with Smith, in particular, looking as dangerous as ever.

?It is a satisfying win. We played hard ... we had to wait until the second half to really get cracking, and in the end we came away victorious,? said Omar Wedderburn, STETHS? coach.

?Now our attention must turn to next week?s top-of-the-table clash against Petersfield, where as it stands we need another positive result for the semis,? he added.

In the first encounter of the Santa Cruz double-header, after promising much, Lacovia were smacked 3-1 by the highly efficient Glenmuir, who now hold pole position to advance to the semi-finals from Zone P.

Cornwall bounced back to tag Old Harbour 2-1, leaving themselves a slight chance of advancing.

Glenmuir took a 28th-minute lead when Kevon Lambert scored with a lofted effort from about 35 yards. The ball flew over André Frater in goal for Lacovia.

David Givons latched on to a pass and fired low across Frater and into the goal as Glenmuir went 2-0 up at the 47th minute. He returned to score his second at the 59th minute.

Clarendon College, along with STETHS, Petersfield High, Dinthill and Glenmuir, all need only a point to progress to the semi-finals and will know their fate in next week?s final quarter-final round of matches.
