Mixed results for Jamaicans at CAC

Having bowed into action in four different sporting disciplines, the country's respective men's and women's teams have returned mixed results so far at the Central American and the Caribbean (CAC) Games, currently underway in Veracruz, Mexico.

In pool B of hockey action, the men's team was hammered 6-1 by hosts Mexico yesterday. The Mexicans scored all six goals via the field goal route, with Miguel Othon in the 19th minute, Miguel Leon (34th), Francisco Aguilar (47th, 68th), and Guillermo Pedraza (59th, 68th) doing the damage.

Jamaica's only goal was scored from a Jerome Davis field goal in the 24th minute, which drew the teams level at that point.

On Saturday, the women's team sunk to a comprehensive 4-0 defeat to Cuba in the pool A opener. The Cubans netted all field goals courtesy of Marisbel Sierra in the fourth minute, Helec Carta (10th, 13th) and Yunia Milanes (37th).

Also on Saturday's opening day of competition, the country's women's table tennis team lost all three of their matches. They were beaten 3-0 by Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago and Colombia, respectively.

The men's table tennis team went down 3-0 to the Republic of Dominica in their first match, then rallied to a 3-0 win over Honduras. They were outscored 3-0 by Cuba on their return to action yesterday.

In the women's triathlon, Louise Daley was disqualified on Saturday morning.

Cyriesse Hall was also beaten 10-5 by Ibeth Rodriquez of Colombia in her women's under 49kg Taekwondo match-up.

Action will continue today, with the women's hockey team taking on Barbados in their second game from pool A. It will be played at midday (Jamaica time).

Meanwhile, in men's Taekwon-do action, Craig Brown will battle Stuart Smith of Aruba in the under 87kg quarter-finals at 4:30pm.
