Ricketts, Wynter delight at All Jamaica Junior champs

The 2014 All Jamaica Junior Badminton Championships which climaxed Tuesday at the Constant Spring Golf Club-Racquet Complex signalled the transitioning of juniors into seniors, as well as turning out potential stars from the under 11-age group up to the under-18 categories.

National player, Samuel Ricketts finished his junior career in style, with two titles from as many matches in the boys category. The wins were in the under-19 singles and mixed doubles events respectively. He came from a set down to outscore Shaquille Palmer 14-21; 21-4 and 21-13. Ricketts and Katherine Wynter combined in the mixed doubles to defeat Tremar Barham and Christina Petri 21-19; 21-13.

"I feel happy about my performance. I was confident I would defend my titles," noted Ricketts. In under-17 singles action, Shane Wilson beat Nicardo Reid 21-14, 19-21 and 21-7. In under-17 doubles, Jahbari Campbell and Oshane Newland defeated Tahjay Nelson and Carey Hart 21-18 and 21-10. In under-15 boys' singles, Joel Angus beat Rhys Reid 21-18 and 21-5.

The two paired to stop Adam Taylor and Marc Anthony Salmon 21-12 and 21-12. Katherine Wynter claimed the under-19 girls singles and under-19 mixed doubles titles. She outscored Alana Bailey 21-12 and 21-10, and won the mixed title with Samuel Ricketts.

"I feel happy and pleased with my performance. I am pleased to finish juniors unbeaten," Wynter said.

In under -17, Esther Reynolds recorded a 21-12 and 21-12 win over Alana Bailey. In under-15 girls'doubles, Shezelle Mctyson and Taina Daley stopped Rashmi Ragbeer and Sharon Chai 21-9 and 21-17. For under-17 mixed doubles, Shane Wilson and Alana Bailey stopped Isaac Roberts and Shantae Smith 21-9; 21-8. Adam Taylor and Shezelle Mctyson recorded a 21-18; 21-14 win over Rhys Reid and Sharon Chai. In under-15 mixed doubles, Adam Taylor and Shezelle Mctyson clipped Rhys Reid and Sharon Chai 21-18; 21-14.

Other winners were: Zane Reid in the under-13, Tijae Hinds in the under-11. Toshiro Jones and Tijae Hinds won the under-11 boys' doubles title. Jade Ranger and Keydone Mcbean took the under-13 mixed doubles. Taina Daley won the under-15, while Emily Reynolds took the girls'under-13.
