Hyatt honoured at CAC Games

Jamaica's Michael Hyatt didn't have the success he expected at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Veracruz, Mexico.

However, the 44-year-old table tennis ace still had a moment in the spotlight as he was one of four players honoured in recognition for outstanding support for the CAC Championships.

Hyatt, Dexter St Louis of Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua's Oscar Molina, and Guillermo MuÒoz were the four honourees.

In a ceremony held near the end of the CAC Games table tennis competition, the four veterans received special awards. Twelve years ago, the right-handed Hyatt won a silver medal with Nigel Webb in doubles to add to a rÈsumÈ that includes competing at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games and twice at the World Championships in 1989 and 1995, respectively. St Louis and MuÒoz are also Olympians.

Hyatt first emerged as a prospect at Calabar High School and at the now defunct Olivier's Decorating Club. He progressed at Anderson College in the United States while winning several national titles.

The 2002 CAC Games were one of the highlights of his career. In addition to winning a silver medal in doubles, he was undefeated in 12 matches in team competition.

After a hiatus from the sport, he returned to compete at this year's World Team Championships. Jamaica won the fifth division of the men's team event there.
