Top schools for Powell meet

TRACK and field fans will get an early look at talent which will be on show next year at today's 12th staging of the Wesley Powell Track and Field meet at Excelsior High.

Several of the island's top high school teams will be in action at the meet which is set to start at 8:30 a.m.

The day's activities will give coaches an indication of where their athletes are ahead of the various Christmas camps and the start of a gruelling season next month.

Today's meet will be one of the biggest ever at the venue. The Tyler Mills meet which is usually held on the same day is off due to the unavailability of the G.C. Foster College track. Calabar High, the 2014 inter-secondary boys' champions, Kingston College, Jamaica College, Munro College and host team Excelsior are expected to battle in the lower classes.

St Jago High's female team will make a reappearance at the meet and all eyes will be on the Spanish Town-based school as, with a powerful unit this year, they are expected to challenge Edwin Allen High strongly for top spot at next year's Boys and Girls' Championships.

On the track, the events down to be contested are 150 metres, 300 metres, 600 metres, 1000 metres, the Open 5000 metres for both males and females along with 4x300 metres relays. Field events will be shot put for girls, Classes One and Two, long jump for girls Classes Three and Four along with high jump for boys, Classes Two and Four.
