Edwin Allen, KC shine

DESPITE the migration of the majority of their Class One athletes, along with their influential throwing coach, Marlon Gayle, defending Girls Champs winners Edwin Allen High made a big statement at the JC Wata meet on Saturday at Jamaica College.

Young Nadine Rose set the stage early in the girls' Class Three 800 metres, winning in 2:24.01, to get the better of Vere Technical's Sanique Walker (2:24.72). Edwin Allen's Jaima Davis finished third overall in 2:25.55.

In Class One, Edwin Allen's Alveena Howell was second in 2:23.80. The outstanding Sasha Gaye Whyte from Vere Technical was the overall winner, in 2:18.96. Third overall went to Papine High's Candice McLeod, in 2:24.50.

In Class Two, St Elizabeth Technical High School's Junelle Broomfield won with 2:17.75, beating Vere Technical's Britnie Dixon (2:20.95) and Kara Grant of Spaulding, third in 2:22.29.

Edwin Allen finished one-two in the Class One girls' shot put and Class Three high jump. Rushelle Frazer heaved 14.96 metres to capture the shot put over Junelle Fullerton (14:35m), as St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) Aysha Champaigne (14.29m) was third.

Asania Ashley topped the high jump with a winning leap of 1.60m, the same height registered by her teammate, Janique Burgher. Danielle Griffiths of Convent of Mercy Academy, Alpha, was third, also with 1.60m.

St Jago High dominated the hurdle events with former Vere Technical athlete Andenette Knight, who took the Class One 100m hurdles in 14.68 seconds.

St Jago's Safia Thompson (14.37) won the Class Two 100m hurdles. Hydel's Priscilla Thomas (14.53) was second, while Patrice Moody of Edwin Allen (14.72) was third overall.

Former Hydel athlete Shanniel English topped Class Three with 12.22 seconds. Holmwood Technical's Christine Irving (12.31) and Hydel Isheena Belnavis (12.35) took second and third, respectively.

Kingston College (KC) and the hosts were the most dominant on the track, while Calabar dominated the throws. The Purples had wins in Classes One and Three hurdles. In Class One, Levaughn Battick won in 14.50 seconds, as teammates Orlando Smith (14.64) and Jovaine Atkinson (14.86) finished second and third, respectively.

KC then claimed one-two in Class Three, as Wayne Pinnock won in 14.02 seconds ahead of Treaquet James (14.31). STETHS' Jashuan Parkes was third in 14.61 seconds.

In Class Two, JC took the quinela. Jordan Roberts won with 14.86, while Oquendo Bernard was second overall in 15.17. Phillip Beckford of KC was third in 15.19 seconds.The North Street boys also topped the Classes Two and Three 100m. In Class Two, Yashawn Hamilton clocked 11.12 to win ahead of JC's Chisholm Gordon (11.34), while in Class Three, Tajean Houston was first in 11.62 seconds and JC's Jordan Douglas second in 11.34.

Obrien Waysome of JC won the Class One 100m in 10.72 seconds.

Calabar swept the top three placings in the Class One discus. Former Cornwall College thrower, Warren Barrett, won with 53.19m, as Ronald Hastings and Andre Beckford both threw 31.12m for second and third, respectively.
