Bromfield tops field to win first Black River 5K

Jasset Bromfield won the first ever Sunset River Run, Black River 5K Run/Walk race in a smart 17 minutes 17.78 seconds on Sunday.

Bromfield was one of 58 participants who took part in the event that was designed to raise funds for the Black River Hospital.

Schoolgirl Candace Newman won the female category. The Spaulding High School student clocked 23:51.28.

Munro College students Daviene Witter and Shawn Kenyon were second and third overall, respectively, while Alicia Banton ended second in the women's category. Fayann Mitchell was third.

Kadian Myers won the female section in the Walk Race. She finished ahead of Cecile Barrett while 11 year-old Gianna Farquharson was third.

Meanwhile, Carl Barrett logged the victory on washe men's side, with the minor places taken by Gusford Cole and Joseph Caine respectively.

Bromfield, who hails from Treasure Beach, was delighted with his run.

"I am very happy to win here; it was a challenging course in parts, but good and fast," said Bromfield.

The event was organised through the Black River Chamber of Commerce and attracted members of the community and some as far away as Montego Bay.

Jody Bernard, the assistant secretary at the Black River Chamber of Commerce and one of the spokespersons for the event, told The Gleaner that funds raised from the run will go directly to the Black River Hospital for the procurement of several vital pieces of equipment.

"We know the hospital is in need of a lot of equipment such as ECG and blood pressure machines, so we thought of this event to bring some attention to the facility, which is a critical element of what makes this town what it is,"" said Bernard.

G.T. Taylor, one of the organisers of the event, said next year's staging will no doubt be better and much bigger, as he hopes to make the event part of the annual road race calendar.
