ATHLETICS: Usain Bolt suffers rare defeat on home soil

World sprint star Usain Bolt suffered a rare defeat on local soil at the Gibson McCook Relays today at the National Stadium.

Bolt, on anchor for Racers Lions,  got the baton a long way behind the University of Technology's (UTech) anchorman Tyquendo Tracey in the 4x100 metres for men's clubs and institutions and although he came storming through in the final 30 metres the gap was too large for even a super human like the world 100 and 200 metres record holder.

UTech, lifted by a brilliant second leg from Julian Forte, won the event in 38.23 seconds from Racers Lions, 38.24, with Racers Track Club third in 39.59.

UTech completed a quick double as the women's quartet of Christina Williams, Elaine Thompson, Shimarya Williams and Chance Bonner put their names in the record books after stopping the clock in the 4x100m in 43.13 seconds to ears the old mark of 43.28 set by MVP.

Calabar High's Class One boys were also brilliant on the day. The quartet of Edward Clarke, Michael O'Hara, Julian Walker and Seanie  Selvin, won the sprint relay in a record 39.32, well under the 39.61 mark they set last year. St Jago High finished second  in 39.80 ahead of  St Elizabeth Technical  who were third in 40.30.

Calabar, with Tyreke Wilson on the final leg,  also triumphed in the  Class Two sprint relay where they were strongly challenged by an injury-hit Kingston College team. KC's Nathaniel Bann on anchor had to be treated at the end of the race after he hobbled across the finish line.

Calabar clocked 40.86 seconds with KC second in 41.42. Jamaica College were third in 41.72.

There were also two wins each for St Jago and Edwin Allen's girls and KC in the 4x 100m.

St Jago broke a long drought in Class One 4x100m when  Georgia Gordon, Peta Gaye Williams,  Shanike Reid and Natallia Whyte, 44.24, beat Edwin Allen, 45.57. Wolmer's were third in 46.27.

St Jago also won the Class Three 4x100m in a fast 45.87 ahead of  Hydel  (47.17) and  Vere Technical, 47.44.

Edwin Allen won the Class Two sprint relay in a record equalling 45.02  while their Class Four team won in 47.74.

KC's Class Three and Four teams were victorious. The Class Four won in 44.45 with the Class Three, 43.09.
