100m finals to highlight first day of Carifta Trials
The 100 metres finals are expected to highlight today's opening day of the two-day 2015 Carifta Trials at the National Stadium.
Top local juniors, now in their final stage of preparation for the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships are seeking spots on the national team to the April 4-6 Carifta Games in St Kitts and Nevis.
The Under-18 girls' 100 metres will be hot. St Jago High's Kimone Shaw, the defending champion, will be hard pressed here as she is expected to get good competition from her teammate Shaniel English and Edwin Allen High's Shellece Clarke. English, formerly of Hydel High, is in great form following her impressive show at the Gibson McCook Relays last Saturday where she clocked 11.63 seconds for third in the women's invitational 100m. English defeated Shaw in Class Two at last year's Boys and Girls' Championships.
With Kingston College's Jhevaughn Matherson set to miss the boys' Under-18 100m, Calabar High's Dejour Russell and Tyreke Wilson look set to fight out the finish.
In the girls' Under-20, Wolmer's Shauna Helps is rounding into top form and is the one to beat, following her impressive win at the recent Corporate Area championships. St Jago's Natalliah Whyte, Vere Technical's Renae Medley and Sashalee Forbes should, however, make this a very competitive final.
Calabar High's Michael O'Hara will lead the charge in the Under-20 100m where he is expected to get good challenges from his teammate Edward Clarke and St Jago's Raheem Chambers .
World Junior champion Jaheel Hyde of Wolmer's Boys is the strong favourite for the Under-20 boys 400 metres hurdles. Hyde is expected to use his class and go all the way in the event. World Youth champion Marvin Williams of St Elizabeth Technical and Kingston College's Davian Baker should be his main challengers.
