Lights for Llandilo Sports Complex in Westmoreland

The often acrimonious situation between the Westmoreland Football Association (WFA) and the managers of Frome Sports Complex over the non-usage and impending removal of the floodlights from that facility has reached an amicable resolution, according to sources.

Devon Maxwell, competitions director for the WFA Charley's JB Rum Major League, told The Gleaner the situation is almost settled following a meeting involving Dwayne Vaz, the Central Westmoreland member of parliament and other interests.

"It's almost done with," said Maxwell. "A follow-up meeting was decided on, at which time we will finalise the removal of the lights from the Frome Complex to the Llandilo Complex, which is the home of our major league games," he said.

"The decision was made thanks to the assistance of Mr Vaz, and, of course, through the insistence of the president, Everton Tomlinson, whose vision is paving a new way of development for our young players," Maxwell said.

The contentious issue was rooted in Tomlinson's decision as the Westmoreland Sports Council's chairman to have the little-used lights at Frome relocated to the more centrally located and heavily used Llandilo, with the aim of playing night matches.

The move, Tomlinson told The Gleaner, would give the clubs the opportunity to acquire the services of better players, who work during match days.

"The lights will most definitely be in place for the mid-season final and that promises to be a big thing for the parish," added Maxwell.

The Llandilo complex is going through a remodelling and build-out phase to increase capacity and to add two more fields, primarily for training purposes.

When completed, it will also be equipped with a court for basketball, netball and volleyball, with plans later for the construction of a competition-ready 50m swimming pool and a shopping plaza, from which income generated will be used to finance the maintenance of the complex.

Meanwhile, in league play, Chantilly Forever edged Golden Touch 1-0 on Monday to move to the top of Zone A with 10 points. Ramone Vassell netted an own goal in the 63rd minute to give Chantilly victory, their third of the season.

Dream FC and Straths FC played out a 0-0 draw in the other Zone A game, while over in Zone B, Negril FC lead with 10 points, two more than second-place Petersfield FC.
