Fisher eyes sub-10 times

University of Technology (UTech)/MVP Track Club sprinter Andrew Fisher has high hopes of building on his club's successes and clocking sub-10 times in the 100 metres.

He will be looking to improve on his impressive 10.18 seconds clocking and help team UTech/MVP reign supreme at today's eighth staging of the Classic.

"Others will try stopping me, but I am doing my best to maintain where I am at, and try to get better," he noted.

"Hopefully, at the next Olympics, I will be on the medal podium. I'm now trying to run sub-10 times," Fisher, 23, told The Gleaner.

Fisher, the fastest collegiate sprinter at the NCB Intercollegiate championships last weekend, can be expected to excite at today's meet.

He was a member of UTech's 4x100 metres relay team which defeated the fancied Racers Lions in the men's clubs and institutions, at the Gibson McCook Relays in late February.

In that event, six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt suffered a rare local defeat while running anchor for Racers Lions. UTech clocked 38.23 seconds to finish ahead of Racers Lions 38.29 and AKAN Track Club, 39.55.

Fisher said his recent improvement has come because of the expert coaching he gets at MVP.

"Coach Stephen Francis, I give him all the praise. He deserves it, he's the best coach right now in the world to me, and to a lot of people, and without him, I don't know where I would be," Fisher underlined.

"When I just came in (MVP/UTech), I was not really a good athlete. I came second at Champs, coach saw me, saw the potential, and he brought me here," the former St Elizabeth Technical High sprinter said.
