WESTERN BUREAU:

Spicy Hill showed poise and class in a 2-1 win over Coopers Pen FC that gave them bragging rights as Trelawny FA Monymusk Plantation Rum Major League mid-season champions.

Damion Williams netted the opener from a defence-splitting pass in the 36th minute. Stern defending from Coopers Pen held the score at 1-0 until the 75th minute, when Jermaine Cato doubled the score.

Coopers Pen did get a consolation, thanks to a clinical strike from Jeffery Johnson.

Earlier, neither team looked like scoring, with Coopers Pen going closest, but wayward shooting let them down.

Oddly enough, Coopers Pen entered the mid-season showpiece in slightly better shape, having not lost a game all season in the league - recording nine wins from 10 matches. They scored 24 times, while conceding seven, to lead Group A on 28 points.

Spicy Hill's record is not that dissimilar, but they had lost twice.

Coopers Pen's next match will be today against Clarks Town at Hyde Sports Ground.

Two other games are also scheduled for today; Upsetters FC, sixth in Group A, will take on fellow strugglers Wakefield (sixth in Group B) in a battle of cellar-dwellers. At Blackwin Sports Ground, Classic United, fifth in Group A, host high-flying Spicy Hill. All matches begin at 3:30 p.m.
