Boys mine gold in 4x100m at Junior Pan Am

Jamaica mined gold in the boys' sprint relay at the Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada last night.

The quartet of Seanie Selvin, Shivnarine Smalling, Hujaye Cornwall and Xandre Blake clocked 40.15 seconds to give Jamaica its first gold medal of the meet on the final night.

Jamaica took advantage of a mishap by the United States on the anchor leg. The Americans had a big lead, but their third-leg runner failed to pass the baton to his teammate. The Bahamas were second in 40.32, with Trinidad and Tobago taking bronze in 40.50.

Jamaica's girls picked up silver in the 4x100m while Ayesha Champaigne won bronze in the Heptathlon to bring the island's medal tally to ten - one gold, two silver and seven bronze.

Champaigne, in fourth position on Saturday's first day of the two-day multi-event, improved to third after the shot put yesterday and maintained that to the end to finish with 5245 points. American Ashtin Samson captured the gold medal after tallying 5462 points with Fiorella Chiappe of Argentina taking second with 5313.

Demar Gayle, who captured silver in the discus on the first day, pocketed a second medal, a bronze, in the shot put. His 18.56 metres took him to third spot.

The girls' sprint relay quartet of Kimone Hines, Joneille Smith, Ashley Williams and Sasha Lee Forbes stopped the clock at 44.31 seconds for second as the United States won gold in 43.79. The Bahamas were third in 45.96.

Jamaica had increased its medal tally by two late Saturday night as both Marvin Williams and Obrien Wasome picked up bronze medals.

Wasome took third in the triple jump final with a distance of 16.17 metres. Cuba picked gold and silver. Leslie Caesa won with 16.83m with his teammate Lazaro Martinez finishing second with 16.52m.

Williams was also third in the 400m hurdles final in 50.44 seconds. World Youth champion, American Norman Grimes, won in 50.10 ahead of his teammate Kenny Salmon, 50.29.
