Scorpions suffer crushing defeat

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Barbados Pride needed just 54 minutes to wrap up an uncomplicated 10-wicket triumph over Jamaica Scorpions and make a strong start to their Regional First Class Championship campaign here yesterday.

They picked up the last two Scorpions wickets for the addition of only 26 runs in just over half-hour, as the visitors were dismissed for 187 in their second innings, and then scored the required four runs to complete the victory at Kensington Oval.

They secured 17 points for their efforts, while Scorpions walked away with a single point.

Resuming the day on 161 for two, Scorpions would have entertained thoughts of saving the game after heavy rains here delayed the start by 11/2 hours.

Once the skies cleared, however, fast-bowler Kemar Roach swiftly removed Jason Dawes (nine) and Marquino Mindley (13) to end the Scorpions' innings.

Pride then needed three overs to knock off the required runs. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite was voted Man of the Match for his first-innings score of 119.

Jaguars stun Windwards

AT GUYANA NATIONAL STADIUM: Left-arm pacer Raymon Reifer and off-spinner Steven Jacobs shared eight wickets as defending champions Guyana Jaguars stunned Windward Islands Volcanoes to pull off an emphatic 104-run victory here yesterday.

Requiring an uncomplicated 230 for victory on the final day, the Volcanoes folded meekly for 125. They were undermined by Jacobs, who claimed four for 35, and Reifer, who picked up four for 41, as the visitors slumped to 76 for seven at lunch.

Miles Bascome top-scored with 38, and captain Liam Sebastien got 36, but were the only two batsmen to pass 15 and only two of four to get into double figures.

AT WARNER PARK: Trinidad and Tobago Red Force crushed hapless Leeward Islands Hurricanes by an innings and 23 runs inside three days, to make a superb start to the Regional Four Day Championship here on Sunday. In the next round starting Friday, Pride host Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, while Scorpions entertain Windward Islands Volcanoes.
