MBU happy for ‘three vital points’ against Reno in RSPL

Montego Bay United FC striker Dino Williams reclaimed the lead in the race for the Golden Boot, after scoring twice in his team's 2-0 win over western rivals Reno FC in Monday night's Red Stripe Premier League football match at Montego Bay Sports Complex.

MoBay's assistant coach Dillon Thelwell was thankful for the win.

"It was a very good game and three vital points for us, which takes us back in front," he noted.

The win also catapulted the former champions back to the top of the league, on 33 points, two ahead of Portmore United (31), with defending champions Arnett Gardens FC (29) and Humble Lion (28) completing the top four.

FC Reno ended the match with 10 players after their captain, Rondell Morris, was sent off for butting Williams, as he retaliated to being bumped in the chest by the striker, in the 49th minute.

It was the second loss for the men from Westmoreland in days. The previous Thursday, Arnett Gardens recovered from a goal down and went on to win their match 2-1.

They remain sixth on 22 points and must now begin to log wins in order to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Williams scored penalty

Williams was on target from the penalty spot in the 14th minute. The referee deemed that a defender had handled the ball inside the area.

His second goal was even more crucial as it put the game squarely out of Reno's reach.

The striker was on the end of a lightning MBU counter-attack that began when Reno forward Roshane Sharpe lost the angle on a nice move forward and the ball fell for the speedy winger, Owayne Gordon.

His pass picked out Williams, who made no mistake from just inside the area in the 55th minute, beating the advancing FC Reno goalkeeper, Devaughn Hawthorn, to make the game safe.

It was his 13th goal of the season, but the striker could have had another if his 76th-minute strike was hit cleanly. Instead, the mis-hit ball crashed against the upright.

"Congratulations to the players who gave it all against Reno. Williams again was at the peak of his performance and with that we are very happy," said Thelwell.

Rivoli United's ace striker, Corey Burke, is Williams' nearest rival for the title of leading scorer. Burke has hit the target 12 times.
