Vidal confident Waterhouse moving in right direction

Waterhouse Football Club President Fitzroy Vidal says the club has to go shopping in the January window to strengthen areas where it has failed on the pitch this season, this as the local powerhouse team looks to rise from its position at the bottom of the 12-team league.

"Certainly, I am not comfortable with the present squad of players. I think that my team needs to be strengthened, and we know where the weak areas are; we have identified them. We think this transfer window presents an opportunity for us to fix that," admitted Vidal, the club's new president.

"We have conceded too many goals, and that is one of the areas we are looking to strengthen. We have identified the players for those positions, but I won't call names now. But I am hoping that we can get some of these deals wrapped up and start getting better results," he told The Gleaner.

Waterhouse, currently bottom on 15 points, started the season with Calvert Fitzgerald at the helm. But after a shaky start, he was briefly replaced by former coach Anthony Patrick, before Paul Young assumed responsibilities recently as head coach.

Throughout the season, the team has struggled for wins, with only three victories from 19 outings to date.

TURNING AROUND CRISIS

The Drewsland-based club has dwelled at the bottom of the table for most of the season, but Vidal has no doubt Young can turn the crisis around and return normalcy to the Waterhouse Stadium.

"I reached out for the coach that I have confidence in, and that is Paul Young. He had to finish up some other work that he was doing overseas, ... and in the interim, I brought in Anthony Patrick.

"Paul took a bit longer than I expected to come in, but since Paul came, in his first two games, we got six goals, significantly more than we have been getting. So at least the conversion is taking place now," the club president assessed.

"The discipline and motivation is at a high at the club, all the players have stepped up their games and we believe we are on our way to getting back to the top," he continued.

Vidal has no fear of relegation and remains confident Waterhouse FC will make the top four, despite being 14 points adrift of a play-off spot.

"It is all-important for us to be in the League, and I have no doubt at this time that we will not drop out of the league. We believe we belong there. We are satisfied with what we are doing to ensure that we maintain our status in the Premier League, and we are going to compete as we are not done yet. I tell you confidently that we are heading for the semi-finals," he stated.

"I want to say thanks to the fans for standing by us in this difficult time. We know it is not easy, but your support has been a tower of strength behind us. I am happy to be a part of this mighty club and committed to delivering results."
