MBU FC hunting ‘convincing victory’ in CFU Club Championship opener
WESTERN BUREAU:
Montego Bay United FC are aiming to deliver a series of great results and win Group Three of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships, declared its owner, Orville Powell, while making a pitch for the fans to give the players elevated support when the competition gets under way this evening.
The western Jamaica outfit will open the group matches against Scholars International of Cayman in an 8 p.m. kick-off at the Montego Bay Sports Complex and will also face defending CFU champions Central FC out of Trinidad and Tobago.
"Coach Davis, the players and everyone associated with MBU are making sure that we are ready, not just as host of this group, but ready to perform at our utmost best," Powell said.
MoBay United are riding a crest of wins to be leading the title chase in the local Red Stripe Premier League and are seeking to join Jamaica's other entrant, Arnett Gardens FC, in the next round of the competition.
Arnett Gardens won their group in Suriname with two outstanding victories to advance to the next round.
Powell, who has transformed the fortunes of the once struggling club, making them one of the most recognisable and successful outfits in local football in recent years, told The Gleaner they need to win.
"We have a coach in Paul 'Tegat' Davis who knows football and knows how to get the best out of his players. We also have good players able to win matches and these couple of matches we must win," he said.
"There is no excuse at this time if we fail to win. Simply put, we need a convincing victory tonight," Powell said.
That win will depend on the mood of the players. If they are hungry enough, Scholars could be in for a rough time, as the likes of Allan Ottey, Owayne Gordon and company could spell danger.
"We believe that our twelfth man, our supporters and fans, should come out this evening in their numbers to cheer on the team, as we go about bringing further glory to our city," he added.
Matches will continue on Friday with Central FC playing Scholars, while on Sunday MoBay United will tackle Central. All matches starts at 8 p.m.
