Miller shooting for Super Six

After winning her first NCB Capital Markets Junior Sporting Clays girls 'B' class 50 birds title, Savannah Miller has now set her sights on making the 'A' class and Super Six rounds of competition soon.

Miller, a seventh grader at St Andrew High School for Girls, shot an outstanding 47 to win her category.

Annabelle Chung, who shot 42, was second and Anna Issa finished third with 41.

According to Miller, she did not get the best preparation.

"I didn't really get a lot of training in. Normally, I would train once a week. I didn't really get a lot of training in because I have been busy, but I tried my hardest," Miller said.

She started shooting last September and credits coach and trainer, Khaleel Azan, the Jamaica Skeet Club president, for her growth.

"Competition is getting harder. Everybody is getting better and improving, so actually, I had to try a little harder and push more," Miller recalled.

 

MAIN GOAL

 

"I actually want to try and get into the Super Six. That is my main goal. My coach wants to move me up to the 'A' Class and, when I am there, I can get into Super Six," Miller told The Gleaner.

She also topped the Girls' 'B' class in the AISK SportsFeva Clay shooting competition earlier this year.

"This year, I think I did better because I am more advanced now and learning more, and that helped me to do better and shoot better and to win this championship," the teen said.

"The other competitions were good, but I think this was my best one. I don't focus on other girls when I am shooting. I try and think that I am the only one there and I am just in training and working to shoot well," she added.

"I am taking great care with training her going forward and how we progress. The 47 out of 50 birds she shot were very good, even higher than the boys who shot," Azan said of the 12-year-old Miller.

He recalled that 17-time World champion, Ben Husthwaite, on his training stints in Jamaica, described the young shooter as World Championship potential.

"Ben has committed that anytime he is here, he will take a special interest in training her as he is very impressed with her abilities as a shooter."
