Roaming Through Rio | Mosquitos missing in action

One full week in Rio de Janeiro and not a single mosquito in sight!

Hard to see what all the fuss was about.

In fact, I think I've significantly decreased the likelihood of catching Zikv by simply being here as opposed to being in Jamaica.

First, it's pretty cold here in Rio. Not freezing cold or anything like that, but it's comparatively very cool even with the sun out in full force, and it gets really cold at nights.

I'm not an entomologist, but it's well known that mosquitos don't do too well in the cold - kinda like me. What I didn't know was that it gets this cold in Rio at this time of the year. Nobody takes the term 'Brazilian winter' too seriously, but I'm beginning to think the jacket I packed is going to prove woefully inadequate when some breeze connect at the open-air track Olympic Stadium next week.

Myself and photographer Ricardo Makyn moved closer to the Olympic Village yesterday and, for the first time since arriving in Rio, it feels like an Olympic Games is taking place in Brazil.

The folks didn't seem too bothered at our last location close to the international airport - just about 33km away from the Olympic Park.

Maybe all the negative international scrutiny 'cut dem vibes', as we'd say in Jamaica.

On that note, I was asked the other day if Brazilians are really just Jamaicans who speak Portuguese. I think so!

So many similar traits, some good and, well, some not so good.

For sure, we both love to and know how to have a good time. We both don't necessarily like to be told what to do and when to do it. We are both not too bothered about what others think of us.

Makyn and I share a daily joke of pointing out people who would fit right in in Jamaica. Like the fellow who supervises the official

transportation from the international airport to the media centre. Picture a 'loader man' in Half-Way Tree. Yep, that's him.

Sure, there are a few problems here in Rio de Janerio. They have been well documented. But in truth, I've not seen much to suggest that this will not be another very good Olympic Games. It will ... right, right?
