UWI look to impress again

The University of the West Indies (UWI) FC will look to continue their surprising run in the 2016-17 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season when they tackle Waterhouse FC in the third-round preliminary stage at the Drewsland Stadium today at 3:30 p.m.

Both teams are at different ends of the 12-team elite league and are coming off victories in last week's round. UWI clipped Tivoli Gardens 3-2 at Edward Seaga Complex, while Waterhouse edged Maverley-Hughenden 2-1 in a fierce Boulevard derby at Drewsland.

UWI are on 42 points alongside Tivoli and reigning champions Montego Bay United (MBU) in the race for top-six qualification. However, Tivoli enjoy a better goal difference ahead of UWI and MBU.

 

ADVANTAGE UWI

 

UWI FC hold the advantage heading to the game. They defeated Waterouse 1-0 in the first round and 1-0 in the second round, and are highly favoured to come away with three points again.

Coach of UWI FC, Marcel 'Fuzzy' Gayle, is a former Waterhouse assistant coach and has used his knowledge of the opponents to good effect.

Waterhouse will look for a win in order to remain in the hunt for a top-two finish that will give them automatic semi-final places. They will rely on key players such as captain Rochane Smith, Girvon Brown, who netted in his return to the club following a stint in El Salvador, Keammar Daley and big defender Patrick Brown.

Meanwhile, Waterhouse moved out of the relegation zone after the win against Maverley-Hughenden and are unbeaten in the last three games. They will enter the game full of confidence. With that scenario, the game could be a treat for spectators.

Waterhouse's main players include veteran Irvino English, Rodave Murray, Neicko Williams and captain Romario Campbell.

In another game, Reno will entertain Arnett Gardens in a crucial encounter at the St Elizabeth Technical High School playing field. Reno are coming off a good win against MBU in St Elizabeth and will be on the hunt for another three points at their new home.
