UWI keeps winning run going

Red Stripe Premier League leaders UWI FC stretched their unbeaten run in the league to ten games after scoring a comfortable 1-0 win over Reno FC at the UWI Mona Bowl yesterday. Patrick Brown netted the only goal 11 minutes into the match, although the hosts had many other chances to add to the score.

UWI assistant coach Andrew Peart says the aim is to continue winning through to the end of the preliminaries, as their intention is to finish as high as possible in the table.

"It was a very efficient win," he said. "We scored early, but we didn't capitalise on the chances we got. This win is very good because we continue the momentum to try to secure as best as possible a finish, so from here on, it's just to win games irrespective of who we play, whether it's a top team or bottom team. The objective is to win, and we can win games with good performances, and today wasn't such a bad game," he said.

EARLY DOMINANCE

UWI has lost just once since the turn of the year and that was a 5-3 defeat to Arnett Gardens on the first match day in January. Since then, the Marcel Gayle-coached team has chalked up six wins and four draws and sit five points clear of Humble Lion and Tivoli, at the top of the standings with 54 points.

They started the contest as the brighter team and capitalised on their early dominance when Brown latched on to a pass and fired past Dennis Taylor in goal. UWI continued to control the game and, minutes later, Anthony Greenland had a goal ruled offside.

After the break, the home team continued to make in-roads into the Reno penalty area, but poor finishing from Greenland and Davion Garrison let them down.

Reno had one real chance at goal midway the second half when Craig Foster eluded his marker and forced goalkeeper Amal Knight to go full stretch to parry his shot for a corner.

But with Keammar Daley controlling the tempo and pulling the strings in midfield, UWI continued to create openings, but failed to add to their tally.

Reno's technical director Wendell Downswell said his team's tactical application in offence let them down.
