Azan eyes club future ahead of retirement

While signalling a choice to demit office soon, Khaleel Azan, Jamaica Skeet Club president, wants to continue working with upcoming shooters, while helping to market Jamaica as a sporting clays sports tourism destination.

Azan is in what he calls a final phase of his four-year term as the association president.

He is credited by some for aiding the growth of clay shooting, attracting much corporate sponsorship of local tournaments and strengthening the junior programme.

"I am going to give up the presidency because after four years, you get tired and you get burnt out, but I am going to focu s on my juniors, number one," Azan said.

"I want to focus on seeing where we can go with scholarships and the development, not only in shooting, but in making them better men and women, the discipline, and focus from this sport makes better people, and that is what I am gonna focus on," he continued.

Azan, who is a national coach and president of the Jamaica Skeet Club, says his future plans also include working to expand the sport internationally.

"I am also going to see how I can help to expand the sport under sports tourism. That is my goal," Azan said.

He also credited a supportive management team and other stakeholders for their work in growing the sport.

" I selected the team four years ago because I wanted people that I could work with, people who would give us support, and we've worked extremely well as a group, and everybody played a big part," Azan added.

He was speaking to the media at last Sunday's NCB Capital Markets Sporting Clay, at the Knolford Polo Ranch in St Catherine.

It attracted a record participation of 170 shooters in terms of the number of girls, beginners and other categories of shooters. It is said to be Azan's last event as Jamaica Skeet Club president.
