Sprinter Wallace aiming to lift Immaculate

With their very small squad, Immaculate High will be hoping to figure well at next week's ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships and be among the top schools in the Corporate Area.

The school has produced some outstanding athletes in the past, and coach Floyd Quarrie would be looking to Class Two sprinter Shaunelle Wallace to fly the school's flag high.

Wallace is expected to score points on the track for her school following good performances this season, including an 11.84 seconds win in the 100 metres at the Wint-McKenley meet at Calabar High. She topped a strong field to finish first overall in the 100 metres and could be among the finalists for the event who could even challenge for a medal.

The Immaculate High star told The Gleaner on Thursday at the Stadium East field that her confidence is high going into the championships.

COMPETING IN THREE EVENTS

"I have been preparing well so far this season and I will be competing in three events, the 100m, 200m and 4x100 metres, and based on my times so far, especially in the 100m, I am very confident that I can make it to the finals. It is going to be tough, but I think I can do so," said a very shy Wallace.

Due to illness last year, she was unable to compete at Champs in her final year in Class Two, but now, she is anxious to do well.

"I was very disappointed that I was not able to compete last year and I am determined to do well. My team members and coach have really motivated me and I do not want to let them down," she added.

Wallace is not new to the sports, as, at the prep school level, she was outstanding at Quest.

"I was champion girl in my final year at prep school and that was a good foundation for me, and now in high school, I am really enjoying my training and we have come a far way. It is a bit hard, but nothing comes easy, and we have good coaches who are young but very understanding," she said.

Wallace has high hopes for her school.

"I strongly believe we can make it into the top 10 and we are hoping that our supporters will come out and cheer for us as we are going to try our best, and whatever we do, we will do it to the best of our ability," she concluded.
