Red Brigade maintain RSPL win streak

Boys' Town's never-give-up spirit is guiding the team away from Red Stripe Premier League relegation. The Red Brigades won their fourth game in the last five with a 1-0 triumph against neighbouring Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex yesterday.

Shamar Nicholson scored his 13th goal of the season with a volley in the 68th minute.

Boys' Town is fighting for its Premier League life. Only a week ago, they were at the bottom. Now, the Andrew Price-coached outfit are currently in ninth position on 32 points, just two behind Reno and Harbour View - both on 32 points.

Boys' Town showed a lot of determination and deservedly won the game for a third straight, which was the first time for them in the season.

Kirk Porter pulled off a point blank save from substitute Peter Keyes to deny Tivoli at least a share of the points in what was an intense game.

Boys' Town's long-serving coach, Price, was full of praise for the performance.

"I think the team is playing well. The players gave everything on the pitch today. We want to continue doing our job by winning the remaining games," Price told The Gleaner.

Nicholson, who scored the all-important goal but was injured and replaced in the closing moments of the game, was naturally happy.

NO ROOM FOR SLIP-UPS

"We have been training hard and talking about each game. We are aware that there is no room to slip up, so the win is crucial," the lanky 20-year old striker said.

"It was a great feeling to score the winning goal for the team. I am now on 13 goals, behind Teddy (Jermaine Johnson), who is on 16 goals. He (Johnson) did not score in the game, so I have to keep positive and continue to work hard," Nicholson, who is also the national senior men's team striker, said.

Meanwhile, losing coach Damion Gordon says that his team fell asleep and allowed the goal.

"It was a tough loss. We went to sleep around the back and Boys' Town scored. But, usually, we are very competent. We have to continue working in the remaining games," said Gordon, who is in charge because head coach Omar Edwards is away at a football coaching programme.
