SENIOR CUP CRICKET: Melbourne, Westmoreland in control

Defending champions Melbourne CC and Westmoreland CA hold the upper hand in their Jamaica Cricket Association Senior Cup semi-final clashes against Kingston and Jamaica Defence Force respectively heading into today’s second and final day.
Led by centuries from Jamaica Scorpions opener, Guyanese-born Trevon Griffith, and former national youth batsman Tarique White, Melbourne, after winning the toss, posted a challenging 415 for eight declared at Chedwin Park.
The Brandon King-led Kingston, in reply, closed nine for two. The competition’s leading run-scorer, Garth Garvey, made three.
Newly-drafted Scorpions four-day opener Steven Taylor, 81, and Andre McCarthy, 24, also got among the runs for Melbourne against fast bowler Marquino Mindley, two for 46, Derval Green two for 59 and left-arm spinner, Fabian Allen, two for 81.
Meanwhile, over at Sabina Park, Westmoreland made a modest 213 after being sent in and at close of play had JDF reeling at 139 for six.
Former national under-19 representatives Thavi Spencer, Shahid Crooks and Javoy Spence made 30, 27 and 24, respectively. for Westmoreland.
The JDF's leg-spinner Garland Palmer, took five for 53, and Shamari Brown, four for 48.
Recent Guyana Jaguars four-day draftee, off-spinner Ramaal Lewis, three for 44, has so far taken most wickets for Westmoreland.
