I’ll be ready for the World Champs - Nugent

MONTE CARLO, Monaco:

HITTING A hurdle in her last race before the World Championships wasn't the best way to prepare but Leah Nugent said she still expected to produce a podium performance when it mattered next month.

Finishing eighth in a time of 58.07s wasn't any kind of indication on where the 24-year-old athlete is in terms of form but she told The Gleaner she was in one piece and ready for the business end of the season.

"I smashed into hurdle three and that kind of threw everything off," she admitted.

"I came here to work out the kinks but its hurdles, you're going to hit hurdles, I've just got to do it when it counts at the World's and get a medal."

In third place finishing with a time of 54.38s Janieve Russell said she was disappointed not to have produced a better performance.

"I'm a bit disappointed because it's a world class field and I wanted to get a personal best no matter what position I came in.

"Right now I believe I am in great form running below 55 seconds, I am running heavy right now, not sure if my coach is going to lighten me up, but I believe I can do great things when I get lighter for next season."

Commenting on missing out on the World Championships Russell added: "For the whole season I have been the top Jamaican up until now, so I am bit disappointed that my bad race happened at the trials.

"But I will have to watch it from home and cheer on my ladies."
