Title now on the line in Holmes vs Crowley fight
Richard 'Frog' Holmes and his coaching team learnt yesterday that his professional boxing match against the unbeaten Cody Crowley will be for the Canadian Junior Welterweight title.
The 10-round bout will take place in Montreal, Canada tonight and Holmes will be looking for a knockout against Crowley as he and his coach Carl Grant have said that they expect judges to favour Crowley (who is fighting in his hometown) if the match goes all 10 rounds and needs their decision.
Holmes said that hearing that the title was now on the line was a surprise for him, but he is planning a few surprises of his own for not only Crowley but also his fans, when he steps through the ropes tonight.
"When I found out that it was a title fight, I said 'What?! I didn't know of any title fight," Holmes shared with The Gleaner. "I just knew that I came here to fight a 10 round fight so when I heard that it was a title fight, it was news to me.
"But then I said 'Okay, it's a surprise for me'. Then in the back of my head I just said all right it's a surprise for me, then I'm gonna surprise him, and surprise his whole community by knocking him out in front of them.
"The belt looks good to me. Mi need it!" Holmes laughed.
Should Holmes win the title, he would become the new Canadian Junior Welterweight title but he would not be able to defend it outside of the country unless he is facing a Canadian.
Holmes' record stands at 14 wins, eight by knockout, seven losses and no draws. Crowley on the other hand, has 12 wins, six by knockout, no losses and no draws.
