Shock defeat for Manning No. 1 seed
Holy Trinity High's coach Devon Anderson was left fuming after the top seeds were humbled 2-0 by Haile Selassie High in an ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup second-round match yesterday at the Constant Spring Complex.
The losers played the final 14 minutes of the match with 10 men after central defender Ronaldinho Rosseau picked up a second yellow card and was ejected by FIFA referee Kevin Morrison for unsporting behaviour.
Tyrese Bloomfield of Haile Selassie was also shown a yellow card following a midfield confrontation between both players.
Bloomfield opened the scoring when he netted in the 38th minute and Roberto Freeman added the second in the 79th minute.
It was Holy Trinity's first defeat of the season and Anderson heaped most of the blame on poor officiating.
POOR OFFICIATING
"I'm very disappointed because of the poor, poor officiating. I don't normally complain about officiating, but this one was very poor. When the game started, there was a hand ball in the box, and we got no call from the referee," a visibly upset Anderson told The Gleaner.
"It definitely looked bad, I don't know what you saw, but it was questionable. We got a few chances, but did not finish, the players' heads were down based on the calls in the game." he added.
"Even the red-card decision, we were not the aggressors. My player was boxed in the face and was pulled away by his teammates, and he got the red card," Anderson added.
Meanwhile, coach of Haile Selassie Perry Bartley said that he was not surprised by the result and his team's performance.
"I'm not surprised. We started out a bit nervous, but as the game progressed, we got into our own and started putting some passes together. We then got the first goal and that propelled us to the victory. We give God thanks," Bartley said.
"We have got to go back to our training ground and prepare for the next leg. Nothing will change in our approach," he added.
Both teams will meet again in the second leg tomorrow.
