Maiden 100 for Palmer

Captain Paul Palmer says playing to his strengths and acknowledging his limitations were key to his maiden first-class hundred, which was scored against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force at Sabina Park yesterday on the third day of their CWI-Digicel Four-day Championship match.

Batting at number five for the Scorpions, and not his preferred number three position, Palmer scored 136 as Jamaica, after starting the day on 318 for four, went on to make a season-high 535 in their first innings.

Trinidad, who tallied 243 in their first innings, closed the day on 21 for one, needing 271 runs to make the Scorpions bat again.

GOOD FEELING

"It's always a good feeling scoring a century in any form of cricket," said Palmer, who, prior to the landmark, had scored four fifties in 18 first-class matches.

"It has finally happened at the first-class level. I played within my limitations. I played to my strengths, and I think I did that well enough to get across the line," he said.

He was particularly comfortable on the front and back-foot to fast bowlers Roshon Primus and the left-handed Daniel St Clair.

"There was no doubt in mind that I could get the century. Things got a little tight for me in the 90s, which, as we know, is known as the nervous 90s, in terms of scoring freely. But thanks to my teammates, I was able to focus and get across the line."
