Manchester Major League on

A new season of the Manchester Football Association began last weekend at the Comfort Football Field with three games.

In the first game, Dane Seaton's 42nd-minute strike gave Los Perfectos a 1-0 win over Alligator Pond. Mile Gully then blanked Villa United 2-0 through goals from Gavin Sinclair (12th) and Andre Smith (58th).

The home team then put the icing on the day's events, winning 1-0 against Old England in front of happy home fans. The scorer was their veteran player Gary Graham, known mainly for his exploits in cricket as a senior batsman for the Manchester team.

Seven teams are contesting this year's competition. Technical Strikers will taste action in the next round this weekend.

Manchester Teachers in JTA Netball finals

Last year's beaten finalists, Manchester Teachers, beat St James Teachers 28-25 at the Juici Patties Complex in Clarendon on Thursday to advance to the final. It was sweet revenge for the Manchester Teachers, who had lost to St James in last year's final.

St James actually started well, winning the first quarter 8-6 before Manchester took over the lead at half-time, 14-12. Manchester will meet Westmoreland, who defeated Kingston Teachers 24-20.

Tru-Juice rebound to take Central Confed lead 

St Catherine representatives Tru-Juice rebounded from a recent shock defeat to Vere of Clarendon to beat another Clarendon team, Moores FC, 3-0, and retake the lead in the Charley's/JB Rum South Central Confed Super League.

The scorers for Tru-Juice FC were Trevor Thorpe (22nd), Seivon Thompson (41st) and Keenel Butler (50th). Manchester's Porus were also among the winners, edging Blackstars FC of St Elizabeth 1-0. The winners had beaten another St Elizabeth team, Real Treasure Beach FC, 2-0 in the previous round.

However, Real Treasure Beach would make another Manchester team pay dearly as they whipped Downs 5-0. Ferron Messam (two goals), Sanjay Anderson, Javid Genius and Tedlar Parchment were the scorers.

In other results, Old Harbour Bay FC and Vere United FC ended 1-1, Hillstars FC and St Bess FC 0-0, Rivoli had a 1-0 away win over Sporting Central Academy, while Holland Police Youth Club swamped Greenvale Academy 5-1.

Henriqueses dominate pre-Florida shoot

The Henriqueses, Orville and Sue Ann, totally dominated last weekend's pre-Florida Open Shoot pistol match in Mandeville at the Manchester Rifle and Pistol Club range in Lincoln.

Orville finished in first place at 647 points, with Sue Ann copping second with 552 points at 85 per cent. Third place was taken by Nathan Seymour, who shot at 77 per cent.

Fourth and fifth went to the experienced club pros Evan Grant (69 per cent) and Owen Campbell (68 per cent).

The shooters used the match as a sharpener for the upcoming Florida Open, a popular attraction for all professional shooters.

Marlie Mount end Naggo Head's dream run

St Catherine parish champions Marlie Mount ended the run of Portmore runners-up Naggo Head with a fighting 11-8 victory at G.C. Foster recently in semi-final action of the INSPORTS National Primary School netball competition.

In the second semi-final, Clarendon's Portland Cottage were in a punishing mood as they hammered Burnt Savannah 26-10.

Ken's stave off strong Portsmouth challenge

Ken's Wildflower turned back a strong challenge from Passagefort United to earn a 300-291 countdown win in the Jamaica Domino Federation-COK-Dragon Stout Portmore/ St Catherine Domino League at Ken's Wildflower Sports Club last Sunday.

In other matches, Naggo Head defeated Garveymeade 300-274; Old Harbour United surprised Links United 300-280; Frasiers Whip thrashed Masterpiece 300-251; Chedwin Strikers trampled Step Over 300-268, and Correctional Services outlast Braeton All Stars 300-268.

The 2018 Magnum/KSAFA Super & Major Leagues continue this weekend with matches at several venues. All games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. unless otherwise stated.
