Vere shines at Camperdown Classics

There were good all-round performances from Vere Technical High School's girls, led by IAAF World Under-18 400m hurdles silver medallist Sanique Walker at Saturday's Camperdown Classic at the National Stadium.

Walker, who was very unlucky not to have taken the gold medal in the event in Nairobi last summer, started her season on a winning note in the event. Despite not having a smooth race, Walker showed her class to win the Open event easily in 59.72 seconds, ahead of St Jago High School's Lavaun Stephenson, who was second in 1:01.04, with The Queen's School's Shackera Samuels taking third in 1:04.94.

Vere got a double on the day in the event as Abbigayle Fearon took the Class 2 event in 1:02.89, with St Andrew High School's Michka Mae Hyde second in 1:04.36, as Ishauna Reid of Queen's ended third in 1:04.91 .

Britney Dixon was a double winner on the day. Dixon won the 800m in 2:19.43, getting the better of Genekee Leith of Fast and Furious Club, second in 2:22.74, and St Andrew's Kelly-Ann Downer finished third in 2:23.30. Dixon also won the 1500m, clocking 4:55.96.

ANOTHER BIG WIN

On the boys' side, Calabar High School's Malik James-King's great season continued with another big win. With two sub-52 seconds clocking in his last two races, he showed his class once again by winning the Class 1 400m hurdles in 52.19 seconds; as Javarn Gallimore, representing Swept Track Club, finished second overall in 53.18 seconds, and James-King's teammate; Nicquaine Henry, was third in 53.95 seconds.

In the field, Calabar dominated the long jump in Classes 2 and 3. It was a clean sweep of the top three spots in Class 2 as Lamar Reid won with 6.84m, ahead of teammates Jordan Turner and Luke Brown, who both did 6.73m.

In Class 3, Pavel Lawrence won, with 6.13m, ahead of Tray Beech, second with 5.63, and Norjay Hylton third with 5.49m.
