Kingston College's Dashawn Morris was the star at yesterday's second day of competition at the Carifta Trials at the National Stadium after a big win in the Under 20 400 metres.
In a loaded field, with only Calabar High's top one-lap runner, Christopher Taylor, missing, Morris captured the event in 46.01 seconds. Calabar's Anthony Carpenter who was nabbed close to the line was second in 46.19 while Antonio Watson of Petersfield High, the World Youth champion,  ran on strongly for third in a personal best 46.45.
There was also an exciting finish in the girls' Under 20 400m.  The Hydel High duo of Shian Salmon and Charokee Young along with St Andrew High's Janielle Josephs were involved in a stirring battle before Salmon prevailed, winning in 52.73. Young ended second in 52.84 while it was a personal best 53.56 for third place Josephs.
There was an upset in the Under 17 boys 400m. Excelsior High's Malachi  Johnson won in 47.48 getting the better of Rusea's High's Rahim Scott, 47.64.  Pre-race favourite, Zidane Brown of Glenmuir High, had to settle for third in 47.79.
Hydel had another success in the 400m as Garriel Whyte took the Under 17 girls event  in 54.09. Holmwood Technical's Danielle Deer was second in 54.35 and Hydel's Oneika McAnuff, third in 54.56.
In field events, Vere Technical's Kamara Distin won the Under 20 girls high jump after clearing 1.77m. Edwin Allen High's Anna Ashley and Janique Burger finished second and third respectively with 1.75m.
Edwin Allen's Ackelia Smith captured the Under 17 girls long jump after leaping 6.19m. She was helped by 3.8 metres per second wind. Aaliyah Lindsay of Alpha, 5.82m, was second while Paula Ann Chambers of Edwin Allen took third with 5.79m.
The meet will end today with  events starting at midday. Calabar's Taylor is down to compete in the Under 20 200 metres.
In the Under 20 hurdles for girls World Under 18 champion, Britany Anderson of Camperdown, will renew rivalry with former teammate, Amoi Brown of Vere Technical.  Anderson suffered a rare defeat in the event when she lost to  Brown earlier in the season at the Youngster Goldsmith meet.
