Jamaica picked up it's first medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after Alia Atkinson won silver in the 50m breaststroke on Friday.

Atkinson touched the wall in 30.76 seconds in the Gold Coast, Australia to continue her success in the pool.

The Jamaican, who also won silver in this event at the Glasgow 2014 games, swam behind England's Sarah Vasey, who won in 30.60 seconds, with Australian Leiston Pickett, 30.78, finishing third.  

Atkinson, the national sportswoman of the year, will now turn her attention to the 100m breaststroke and the 50m butterfly events. 

In netball, the Sunshine Girls defeated South Africa 57-46, to win their second straight match at the Games. 

Jhaniele Fowler-Reid scored 29 goals from 31 attempts, while Shanice Beckford added support with 15 from 20 and Romelda Aiken, 13 from 16. 

Jamaica also enjoyed success in badminton, after defeating Zambia 5-0 in mixed team event play. However, Chris Binnie lost 3-0 to Welshman Joel Makin in Round of 16 action in squash, while the Jamaicans also went down 33-4 in men pairs action in Lawn Bowls.
