Alia Atkinson progressed to the next round of the women's 50m butterfly at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, after swimming third in her heat at the Optus Aquatic Centre in Gold coast, Australia.

Atkinson, the 50m breaststroke silver medal winner, posted 26.91 seconds, to finish behind Australia's Cate Campbell, 25.83 seconds, and Canada's Rebecca Smith, 26.65 seconds, in what was a fast heat.

The Jamaican was the sixth overall fastest qualifier to the next round and although she is considered to be stronger in the breaststroke, will certainly be looking to secure another podium spot at the Games.

At the Cairns Convention Centre, Jamaica's female basketballers suffered a heavy 80-49 loss to New Zealand with Jennifer George contributing 12 points for the Jamaicans.

Male gymnast Reiss Beckford ended the individual all round final in 16th position, with a cumulative score of 74.675 points. The gold medal went to England's Nile Wilson, who scored 84.950 points, with the silver going to another Englishman, James Hall, 83.975. Third place went to Cyprus' Marios Georgiou, 83.750 points.
