The Total Lubricants Easter Carnival of Speed was worth going miles to see as the first meet of the circuit racing season roared off at Dover Raceway in St. Ann on Monday.

By midday the eager crowd had swelled exceeding all expectations according to race organiser Monique Gibbs. Many came anticipating keen rivalry and pedal-to-metal action and they were not disappointed.

News came early that the much anticipated debut of the Kia Rio, dubbed "The Beast", driven by Doug 'Hollywood' Gore was not to be. While the other contenders lined up to scorch the track The Beast was quietly making its way back to Europe for repairs under warranty after massive engine failure. That left other drivers to party and so they did.

The crowd was treated to wheel-to-wheel action between Kyle 'Speedy' Gregg and 'King' David Summerbell. Gregg proved best in the Thundersport 2 class winning two races and coming second to Summerbell who had one win and a second. The name Summerbell also featured in Thundersport 1 where daughter Samantha took the fight to the boys proving that she was no slouch.

EXCITEMENT

The biggest excitement, however, was in the Improved Production (IP) and Modified Production (MP) classes. The "Young Guns" barked loud giving the big crowd a lot to cheer about. The best race was possibly race three of MP2 where William "Wings" Myers and Fraser "Frazz" McConnell flogged the track to settle a better driver argument going on since both were literally in diapers driving go karts. The race stewards had earlier penalised McConnell for 'an improper manoeuvre' which caused Myers to spin out in corner 10 in Race 1 of MP2. The race was awarded to Myers and he came back to win Race 2 with McConnell having a point to prove.

Going six laps, the two wasted little time in getting down to business with the Ironade Civic of McConnell trying to wash away the KFC of 'Wings'. Colin Daley Jr. also had a lot to say as they headed to corner one three cars wide. Muscling his way in was Peter Jaggon in his MP3 Class Honda Integra. The heat of the action was too much for Jaggon at corner four which saw him spinning out and being left to work his way from the back of the pack. He drove like a man possessed, sometimes overtaking three cars at a time. All of this action took place between laps one and two of the race. Up front McConnell kept a clean line while pushing the Ironade Civic to the limit as Myers begged the KFC car for all it could give. Jaggon who by lap four had disposed of Daley and had McConnell in his sights when his engine screamed no more, leaving the car dead at corner five. MP2 Race #3 ended with McConnell followed by Daley then Myers in third.
