Christie: No help whatsoever - MBU says striker Dino Williams recovering well after surgery
Sandra Christie, director of administration and operations manager at Montego Bay United (MBU), said no help was forthcoming despite a year-long request for aid to fund the surgery of former national striker Dino Williams.
Williams, who first represented Jamaica at the senior level in 2012, has been playing with a groin injury he picked up while playing in the United States for United Soccer League team Indy Eleven in February 2016.
"No help, though we had asked the Jamaica Football Federation. No help either from the Social Development Commission, despite the ministry and everybody talking about wanting to help our athletes," said Christie, who described the situation as unfortunate.
Christie, who was reluctant to disclose the cost of the surgery, done locally, said she was happy that Williams' operation was a success.
"The surgery was done last week, and he is recovering. He had his post-surgery check-up today (Thursday), and it's a good report, so I'm happy to say it was successful," Christie told The Gleaner yesterday.
Williams finished the 2017-18 Red Stripe Premier League with 10 goals, picking up the award for the most goals in the third round of the competition in the process.
Christie noted that this was a relief for the club and that MBU is looking towards a speedy recovery so that Williams can pick up where he left off a few weeks ago.
"We have long wanted it to be done, but Dino had decided to help the club last season. He did a whole lot, even more than we had expected, to carry us right through to the final game. So we are grateful to him," Christie said.
"It's a relief for us to actually be able to get this addressed for him. Hopefully, we can look to getting him into better situations, even internationally, where he can do what he is so talented to do," she added.
