World Cup favourites Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland in their opening Group E match on Sunday in Russia.

A brilliant curling shot by Phillipe Coutinho in the 20th minute gave Brazil 1-0 half-time lead but Switzerland hit back after the break through Steven Zuber in the 50th minute.

As Brazil pressed forward early in the first half Coutinho picked up a loose ball at the edge of the 18-yard box and put his shot out of reach of Switzerland's goalkeeper Yann Sommer and in off the far post.

Zuber's goal came five minutes after the break when he jumped highest to nod home a Xherdan Shaqiri corner.

Earlier, in the second match of the day, CONCACAF kingpins Mexico pulled off a massive upset in Group F when they clipped defending champions Germany 1-0. Young star Hirving Lozano scored the winner in the 35th minute.

Serbia, courtesy of a brilliant free kick by Aleksandar Kolarov in the 56th minute, were also 1-0 victors over Costa Rica in the day's opening match in Group E. They lead the group with three points.
