Bailey-Cole continues good form

The country's top local senior and junior athletes warmed up for this weekend's JAAA National Athletics Championships after creditable performances during the fifth All Comers Meet at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Former Commonwealth Games 100m champion Kemar Bailey-Cole continued his progress this season with a good win in his pet event. Bailey-Cole, like he did two weeks ago, came out on top in the event after stopping the clock in a season-best time of 10.27 seconds, competing in a negative wind of 1.0m per second. Calabar High School sprint hurdler Dejour Russell ran well to finish second in 10.31 seconds, with Gilbert Hainuca of MVP Track Club placing third in 10.39 seconds. Former Calabar standout Michael O'Hara could only managed a sixth-place finish in 10.55 seconds.

Fabian Hewitt, also formerly of Calabar, was the best male in the 200m as the Clemson University-bound athlete clocked 20.91 seconds. Brendon Riley of Sprintec Track Club, 20.94 seconds, and Oraine Palmer, 21.16, competing unattached, finished second and third overall.

Deuce Carter captured the men's 110m hurdles in 13.92 seconds, ahead of Tyler Mason, second in 13.97 seconds, in a negative wind of 1.4m per second here. In the 400m hurdles, Javarn Gallimore was best among the seniors after winning in 49.83 seconds as Jaheel Hyde clocked 50.33 seconds for the runner-up spot. Calabar's Malik James King was third in 50.41 seconds.

Top junior in the World this season in the 400m, Dashawn Morris of Kingston College (KC), competing in the event for the first time since his success at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships, won the event for juniors in 46.22 seconds, ahead of Calabar's Shemar Chambers, second in 46.62 seconds .

In the field events, Shakwon Coke upstaged his KC teammate, Wayne Pinnock, in the boy's long jump after winning the event with a personal best of 7.68m. Pinnock was second with 7.61m, and Kamal Fuller of Eagles Track Club, third with a jump of 7.49m.

In the throws, Traves Smikle topped the senior discus field with a winning distance of 63.92m, while Calabar's Kai Chang topped the juniors with 59.85m.

Among females, national senior representative Nickeisha Wilson led the way after winning the 100m hurdles in 13.23 seconds, ahead of World youth champion Britany Anderson, second in a season-best 13.46 seconds. In the Under-18 event, St Jago High School's Crystal Morrison won in 12.50 seconds ahead of Excelsior High School's Ackera Nugent, second in 12.54 seconds.

Edwin Allen High took the top three spots in the junior girl's 100m. Tia Clayton won in 11.77 seconds, ahead of Fredrick McFarlane, 11.81 seconds, and Serena Cole, third in 12.01 seconds.

Carifta Under-20 champion Shian Salmon had an easy win in the girl's 400m hurdles in 59.42 seconds.
