Stein stars for Ja Juniors

Junior golfer Jack Stein turned in a scintillating display on yesterday's second day of the three-day Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships (CAJGC) at the Caymanas Club to keep the hosts in contention for the overall title.

The 17-year-old Stein, who attends Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, United States, shot an excellent one under par 71 in windy and humid conditions in the boys' Under-18 section.

Stein's performance, and Justin Burrowes' 76, lifted Jamaica to victory among the Under-18 boys.

WELL-PLAYED

Stein said that he was very happy with his performance because he did well despite the tough conditions on course.

"I think I played really well because the wind was tough all day, but I just kept telling myself that I had to do it for the team," said Stein.

"The green was very quick and I putted really well and so I am just really happy with how I played," he said.

Stein added: "I am feeling confident in my game now and I am excited and ready to go for the final day."

The Jamaicans dominated yesterday's proceedings as they won three out of the six categories.

However, despite their dominance, they remained second in the standings with 91 points, seven behind leaders and defending champions Puerto Rico.

Jamaica's coach Jason Lopez, said that the hosts can win the tournament, but they must play well today.

"I think that we have a chance because we are not that far off, but we have to play our best golf on the final day," said Lopez.

"We will have to win all our categories right across the board and we will have to be very consistent through all the age groups," he said.

"I am still very confident that we can do it, but it is going to be a difficult task, but it is certainly possible.

Other winners on the day were Tiana Cruz, who topped the girls' Under-18 with a score of 78 and Rocco Lopez, who completed Jamaica's third victory when he carded a 77 to capture the boys' Under-13 section.
