Local rugby contingent ready for CAC Games

The local contingent, which comprises Olympic track and field bronze medallist Warren Weir, Owen Linton, Reinhardo Richards and James Gordon, are set to depart the island on July 29.

They have been in training at St George's College and are set to link with their team-mates in the South American country.

Owen Linton, 24, who plays in the prop position, says that while the CAC Games is not as competitive as Commonwealth Games, where he also recently competed, he is going there to do his best for the team.

"This will be my third appearance on the Sevens stage but I am looking forward to my first time at the CAC Games. Right now, it (CAC Games) is not as high as Commonwealth. It is not as competitive," Linton told The Gleaner.

 

'Giving our best'

 

"However, we aim to give of our best, as we have been in training since April. I am looking forward to the competition over there."

Reinhardo Richards, another member of the local boys, is hoping that the team represents well in order to get better recognition.

"My expectation is to really go out there to put Jamaica on the map. And, to really do this for the local boys. We need the push and get endorsement out there so that rugby can get more eyes in Jamaica. I want to see the sport get more popular here," Richards noted.
