Jamaica's Lesgar 'Speedy' Murdock and Howard Cooke were in sparkling form in the Open Division on Day Two of the Pan American Handgun championship at the Woodleigh Range in Clarendon yesterday.

Murdock added another 500 to his score of 481, to end the day in third on 981. Chile's Miguel Mondaca led the way with 995 with Tony Champney of the Cayman Islands second on 982. Guilherme Albuquerque of Brazil was next with 972, Cooke, 963 and Martin Balbi of Argentina with 922.

Jamaica's ace shooter Murdock was pleased with his day's work and is eagerly awaiting action on today's third day.

"So far it has been good. I had a good first day, but today (Tuesday) was even better. I have made very few mistakes so far and I want to keep it that way," he told The Gleaner.

"I am hitting the stages well. But I have 12 more stages left and I am trying to do the same thing. I have been consistent throughout the stages so far and I want to keep it that way," he added.

Kevin Cheung was ill and missed yesterday's action but Murdock is confident, the team can close the gap on the front-runners in the team competition.

"We had a guy that got sick this morning and couldn't make it. But the other guys are holding up pretty well. Hopefully he (Cheung) can shoot these stages tomorrow and we can catch up. But I am looking forward to day three, I can't wait," he added.

David McMorris (887) and Bernard Lawrence (833) were a bit off the pace in the division.

Over in the Standard Division Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Hopkinson leads with 1018. He is followed by Gill Gerard of Barbados 980, Jamaica's Paul Dixon (977), Andrew Yap 959, Canada's Ian Jones 942, Jamaica's Patrick Evelyn 941 and Canada's Mike Burrell, 938.

Yap, Jamaica's Standard team captain, thought his team had a great day.

"First day was good but I shot much better today. I am pleased with my performance," he said

"The standard team is doing well, we had it a little rough yesterday but we built a momentum and shot very solid today," he added.

In the Production section, Gabriel Mondaca of Chile was in front on 1303. Canada's Berdat Alexandre is next on 1004 after 12 rounds. They are followed by American Casey Reed with 988 and Argentina's German Rometelli (980). Jamaica's Scott Brown has 963, Anthony Johnson, 945 and Michael Bradshaw, 911.

The tournament continues at the Jamaica Rifle Association on Mountain View Avenue today.
